Education Session | How to Use Medical Play to Support Kid’s Understanding of a Cancer Diagnosis
In this presentation, we will learn how to use medical play to
– Uncover and clarify misconceptions
– Provide a safe space to express wonders and worries
– Prepare children for what they might see/experience, and what changes they can expect
– Develop plans and strategies for coping

Jacki Stein is a Certified Child Life Specialist. She received her Master of Science in Developmental Disabilities with a concentration in Child Life from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and completed her child life internship in the hematology/oncology, inpatient medicine, and emergency departments at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, Ontario.
Alexx Friesen is a Certified Child Life Specialist and Certified Trauma Professional. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Western University in London, ON and obtained her child life certification through the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2016, she completed her internship in a community child life placement and abroad, learning from Child Life Specialists at the Shoe4Africa children’s hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. Before joining Heart House Hospice, Alexx worked as a Child Life Specialist, serving the pediatric population at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga.
