When your child has cancer, you have lots on your plate. When they have finished treatment, support is still so necessary for you, your partner and your other kids, but it can be very difficult to find.
To address the significant and well-recognized gap in support for pediatric cancer families, Gilda’s Toronto and the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) are thrilled to launch Life After Treatment: Pediatric Parent Support Group, a new program created in partnership with and funded by POGO.
“After their child’s cancer treatment ends, the emotional, psychological and social needs don’t disappear for many parents; instead, they face a new set of challenges,”
said Denise Mills, the Provincial Clinical Lead, Pediatric Oncology Nursing at POGO.
“Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario partners to achieve the best childhood cancer care system for children and their families. Together with Gilda’s Toronto, we want to ensure families confidently navigate life long after treatment ends.”
This virtual, professionally led support program is designed for parents experiencing cancer-related stress whose child has completed cancer treatment within the past five years. It will:
- Improve access to cancer support
- Reduce isolation for pediatric parents
- Provide access for families throughout Ontario
- Ensure support reaches equity-deserving and underserved communities
- Help families navigate the transition into survivorship with greater confidence and connection
- Make certain that families continue to feel supported—long after treatment ends
“At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to equity,”
says Elizabeth Dalgleish, Executive Director of Gilda’s Toronto.
“We are intentionally working to ensure that Ontario families — regardless of where they live — can access meaningful emotional and practical cancer support. This initiative is about building a more inclusive and connected system of care.”
Adds Tory Hagerman, Family Support & Outreach Manager at Gilda’s Toronto:
“This is a vulnerable transition period when parents need the specialized cancer-related support that Gilda’s Toronto offers. We know that pediatric families equipped with practical and emotional tools can navigate these evolving challenges when they have a welcoming and supportive space. “
In 2026, a total of 24 participants can join the Gilda’s Toronto 8-week spring or fall program. Other children in pediatric families will also have access to Kids Talk Out, an opportunity for them to discuss their siblings’ diagnosis and treatment with other kids. To access these cost-free programs, visit our membership sign-up page and complete the form. A mental health professional from Gilda’s Toronto will contact you with the next steps.
