Gilda’s Toronto and Childhood Cancer Canada partnered to address a gap in pediatric family support. This collaboration delivers free, accessible psychosocial programs to families impacted by cancer across Canada, ensuring our groups are accessible, safe, and responsive to families’ complex needs.
We have seen firsthand that this unique program leads to improved well-being and reduced stress for families facing cancer. Participants frequently share that taking part in the group lessens their sense of isolation and helps them manage anxiety. The positive effects often extend to the entire family, fostering resilience and promoting healing. In 2024-25, 103 people—including adult caregivers, children, youth supporting someone with cancer, and bereaved family members—participated in the support group.
Dorothy Erickson appreciated the opportunity for her son, who is coping with his sister’s cancer, to join Kids Talk Out.
“It’s very difficult for a young child to understand and cope with their emotions of fear and uncertainty about their sibling’s diagnosis. That group provided something that was just for my son. At his first session, he came running out of his room 10 minutes in and said, very excitedly, Mom, there are three other kids here whose siblings have the same cancer as my sister. He knew he wasn’t alone.”
Gilda’s Toronto uses technology to help maintain connections, sending reminders to participants and tracking attendance as part of our engagement strategy. If a member misses a session, a staff member will often reach out as a gesture of care to provide further opportunities to provide personalized support.
We believe deeply in the power of collaboration. Partnering with healthcare institutions, cancer centres, and community organizations allows us to extend our reach and build trust with new audiences. These partnerships are essential for sustainability and shared learning. We bring proven facilitation models, digital infrastructure, and clinical insight while supporting our partners in strengthening their own capacity to serve.
